Boat groups

Boat groups are one of the most popular features we’ve added to noforeignland, and we continually get feedback from cruisers we meet telling us how they’ve met many other boats along the way using them.

Boat groups allow sailors with a common interest to find one-another. By joining a group, you indicate that you share that group’s interest. For example: if you are interested in fishing from your boat, then you’ll look for groups related to fishing.

After you join the group you will be able to:

  • Create posts and chat with other group members
  • Filter the map to see if there are any other group members near you.

Read how one family found friends for their kids using our groups:

You can find other group members by filtering the map to show their boat locations.

It’s quick and easy to create a group:

  1. Open the Boat Groups page
  2. Click on the Create Group button
  3. Complete the form
  4. Save your changes

By default a new group will be public (anyone can see who the members are and what they have posted), it will be listed for others to find on our boat groups page, and anyone will be able to join the group without approval.

You can change the default settings when you create the group, and (as the group administrator) any time after it has been created:

There is a detailed example in this article:

When you create a group, you become the group’s administrator. An administrator can appoint more administrators and moderators to help run the group. Users assigned these roles can:

AdministratorModerator
Change the group’s name
Change the group’s banner image
Change group privacy settings
Appoint new moderators and admins
Approve/reject new member requests
Eject group members
