The South
Last updated: 24 March 2026
Overview
The South Atlantic coast of the USA runs from North Carolina through South Carolina and Georgia to the Florida border, with a mix of barrier islands, sounds, inlets, and estuaries. Cruising yachts with suitable draft have the option to use the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). Deeper‑draft vessels, and those with higher masts, make the journey offshore, with frequent inlets offering stops along the way. Once inshore, coastal towns provide harbour facilities, while large areas of marsh and protected shorelines offer quieter anchorages and access to nature reserves.
Attractions
Cumberland Island National Park preserves most of Cumberland Island in southeastern Georgia as a national seashore, including beaches, dunes, maritime forest, and salt marshes on the largest and southernmost of Georgia’s barrier islands.
Plum Orchard Mansion is a historic house on Cumberland Island, begun in 1898 for George Lauder Carnegie and designed by Peabody and Stearns in a Georgian Revival style, with later extensions completed by 1906.
USS Yorktown at Patriots Point is an Essex‑class aircraft carrier, commissioned in 1943, now moored in Charleston Harbor at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort focuses on North Carolina’s maritime heritage, with exhibits on regional shipwrecks, traditional watercraft, fisheries, and the coastal environment.
Notes for mariners
The Gulf Stream strongly influences movement along this coast and runs north at up to 4 knots in places. Southbound vessels can sometimes find a counter-current inshore of the main stream, near the 10‑metre depth contour.
Many inlets along this coast are prone to shoaling and strong tidal currents. Inlets are generally classified as class A or B. Class A inlets are designated safe in all weather, class B are not. When wind opposes current, some inlets form dangerous standing waves. Local guidance and recent reports should always be checked before entry.
