Maine

Overview

Maine’s coast runs from the New Hampshire border to Canada, with a rocky, indented shoreline and many islands. Coastal towns often have working waterfronts built into the centre of the community, with fishing, lobster wharves, and small boatyards still in regular use. Navigating Maine’s waters often involves threading through narrow passages while avoiding numerous lobster pots and rocky islands.

Attractions

Seguin Island Light Station marks an offshore island at the mouth of the Kennebec River and has a long record as a major aid to navigation on this coast. Crews may detour here in settled weather for views of the lighthouse, the island plateau, and traffic using the river approaches.

The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens occupy a large waterfront site near Boothbay Harbor with paths, formal plantings, and woodland trails. Visiting crews can use harbour moorings and the garden's own convenient dinghy dock to go ashore for a walk through the gardens.

Puffin breeding areas at Eastern Egg Rock Island are managed as a protected seabird sanctuary with no general land access during the breeding season. Crews usually stop in nearby harbours and join local tour boats that circle the island for offshore puffin viewing during the main season.

Notes for mariners

Tides are semi‑diurnal, with ranges from roughly 9–11 feet in the southwest to around 18 feet near the Canadian border, and currents can be strong in narrow inlets and channels.

Lobster pots are widespread along much of the Maine coast, and in some stretches the density is such that yachts must pick a careful path through them to reduce the risk of entanglement.
