Cape Cod
Last updated: 24 March 2026
Overview
Cape Cod is a sandy peninsula projecting into the Atlantic from southeastern Massachusetts, forming Cape Cod Bay on its north and Nantucket Sound to the south. The two areas are linked by the Cape Cod Canal, a man‑made waterway that offers a sheltered shortcut through this otherwise hazardous headland.
On the southern side, the Nantucket Sound area combines major yachting hubs like Falmouth with attractive cruising stops on nearby resort islands such as Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket that feature busy seasonal harbors and strong links to regional yachting routes. Wider Cape and Islands itineraries often extend southwest to include offshore stops like Block Island, where visiting crews use Great Salt Pond as a sheltered harbor and go ashore for beaches, coastal walking, and the island’s prominent bluffs and lighthouse views.
To the north, Cape Cod Bay has a more open feel, with fewer marinas, several smaller town harbors and mooring fields, and a stronger working‑waterfront and fishing focus, especially around Provincetown, giving this side of the cape a quieter, more workboat‑oriented character.
Attractions
The historic village center of Wickford has well‑preserved streets and waterfront buildings and offers an easy shore walk for visiting crews interested in local architecture and traditional small‑town New England character.
The Sailing Museum in Nantucket presents exhibits on local maritime history, traditional sail craft, and offshore racing, providing a concise overview of the region’s sailing culture and heritage.
Boston offers a major urban harbor that many yachts include in their itineraries. It is the home of the historic naval frigate USS Constitution, first commissioned in 1797 and now a prominent visitor attraction berthed in the Charlestown Navy Yard.
Notes for mariners
When transiting the Cape Cod Canal, yachts may carry sail for steadiness but must proceed under power. Tidal streams are strong, so time your passage to ride the appropriate ebb or flood for your direction of travel.
