California

Overview

The California coast is a largely passage‑oriented coastline with well‑spaced refuges connecting a small number of major hubs. Safe harbors are spaced so that many legs fall in the 40–60 NM range and can be completed in a day, with some stretches commonly planned as overnight passage.

Attractions

A north–south passage along the California coast often includes San Francisco Bay, where crews can visit attractions such as Alcatraz and Angel Island. Further south, Monterey offers a compact harbor with direct access to Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium from the docks. After Big Sur, Morro Bay’s sheltered estuary and working harbor below Morro Rock provide a reliable and welcome refuge.

Approaching Southern California, Santa Barbara’s harbor and marina lie beside Stearns Wharf, a wooden pier with restaurants, shops, a small aquarium and sea views. Before reaching Los Angeles, Channel Islands National Park is a key destination offering multiple anchorages and easy shore access for hikes and wildlife viewing. Avalon, the only incorporated city in the Channel Islands, offers a compact seaside town with narrow, walkable streets and a bay packed with boats, giving it a distinctly Mediterranean feel. Lastly, San Diego’s extensive bay and marina network form the main provisioning and staging point for boats planning to continue south to Mexico.

Notes for mariners

Along much of the California coast, particularly in larger or urban harbors, anchoring and long‑term stays are tightly controlled. Overall, the coast remains usable for short‑term anchoring between passages, but regulations in many harbors limit duration, location, and in some cases require advance permits.

During the main cruising season (roughly late spring to early autumn), the dominant factors for yachts on the California coast are the prevailing northwesterly winds and the south‑setting California Current, which may set at up to 0.5 knots.

In Southern California, Santa Ana events can send strong offshore winds out over the coastal waters and Channel Islands, most commonly from autumn through spring, with frequent 25–35‑knot winds and occasional gusts exceeding 50 knots in exposed areas.
