Tongatapu Group (Southern Tonga)

Last updated: 1 January 1970

Overview

Tongatapu is Tonga's main island and the seat of its government, monarchy, and largest population. Nuku'alofa, the capital, sits on the island's north coast and is the primary port of entry for yachts arriving from New Zealand and the south. The island is low-lying coral limestone with a settled, agricultural character quite different from the volcanic drama of the northern groups.

Minerva Reef, roughly 260 nautical miles to the southwest, falls within the Tongatapu cruising area and is a well-established staging point on the passage to and from New Zealand.

Attractions

The Ha'amonga 'a Maui Trilithon is a coral limestone megalithic arch on the northeast coast of Tongatapu, standing around five metres high and dating to around the thirteenth century. It was built during the reign of the eleventh Tu'i Tonga. The surrounding area is walkable.

Anahulu Cave is an underground cavern with a freshwater pool open for swimming. The cave contains stalactites and stalagmites and is described by visitors as the highlight of a Tongatapu island tour.

The Mapu'a Vaea Blowholes on the south coast are a striking natural feature, where waves force water through fissures in the limestone.

Fehoko Arts Gallery and Tours is the workshop of Steven Fehoko, described as Tonga's master carver. His wife's tapa cloth and weaving work is displayed across the street. The family also runs island tours and carving workshops for visitors.

At Minerva Reef, the North Blue Hole is a submerged chamber around 50 metres deep with healthy hard coral, gorgonian fans, and resident giant trevally. Visibility is exceptional.

Notes for mariners

Yachts clearing in here and intending to sail north from Tongatapu to Ha'apai and Vava'u must obtain a Local Movement Form from customs before departure. Port Authority fees apply and must be paid before the form is issued.

Minerva Reef is an open ocean atoll with no land above water at high tide. The reef can be rolly in westerly or northerly weather.
