Gulf of Panama
Last updated: 3 February 2026
Overview
The Gulf of Panama is a wide, shallow bight with a large tidal range and long stretches of low, mangrove‑lined coast. It is a major gathering point for yachts travelling both to and from the Panama Canal.
Attractions
Panama City is the main yachting hub in the Gulf of Panama, with a skyline waterfront, several marinas, and easy access to marine services, making it a natural jumping‑off point for Pacific passages. The real prize for cruisers, though, is Las Perlas: a sizeable archipelago of hilly, forested islands, sand‑fringed coves, reefs, and small islets that together form the main cruising playground here.
Notes for mariners
Be prepared for tidal ranges of up to around 5–6 meters on spring tides in this area. In Las Perlas, there are numerous rocks and reefs, and some may be poorly charted or unmarked. Near Panama City the water is typically muddy, making underwater obstructions and your anchor difficult to see. Off Balboa, expect heavy commercial traffic associated with the canal approaches and anchorages.
