Mexico Caribbean Coast

Last updated: 24 March 2026

Overview

Mexico’s Caribbean coast runs along the eastern Yucatán Peninsula, including the resort corridor south of Cancún and nearby islands such as Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, backed by mostly low, sandy shoreline with coral reefs, lagoons, and mangrove areas closer inshore.

Isla Mujeres serves as a common staging point for yachts moving between the United States, Cuba, and the western Caribbean, offering a convenient landfall and hub for onward passages.

Attractions

Mexico’s Caribbean coast features many cenotes, natural limestone sinkholes that often connect to underwater cave systems. Many, like Cenote Dos Ojos, are swimmable with a guide and lie within a short drive of the coast.

Further inland Ek Balam is Maya archaeological site in Yucatán, known for its large acropolis and preserved stucco façades.

Punta Sur at the southern tip of Cozumel forms part of an ecological park with reef, beaches, lagoons, and low forest in a protected area.

Notes for mariners

The northbound Yucatán Current and the broader Gulf Stream significantly affect passages along the coast or when heading offshore from the mainland.
