The Peloponnese

The southern Peloponnese forms three prominent capes at its southern extremity, enclosing the Laconian Gulf to the east and the Messinian Gulf to the west. Both gulfs offer considerable attractions, sheltered cruising waters and see considerably less yacht traffic than many other parts of Greece.

When transiting the Peloponnese heading south from the Ionian, you will first encounter Niokastro Fort at Pylos, built by the Ottomans in 1573, which includes a church, museum spaces, and a pottery display in the citadel. Further south, Methoni Castle is a large fortress on a headland, connected by a stone causeway to a distinctive octagonal tower on a small island.

Rounding into the Mani peninsula, Diros caves are a flooded cave system explored by guided boat extending to approximately 1,200 metres.

Near Neapoli, the wreck of Kaptan Ismail Hakki lies on its port side in just 3 to 12 metres of water in the bay of Agia Marina. The 30-metre Turkish merchant vessel sank in January 1978 and retains its propeller and rudder, making it an interesting snorkelling and dive site easily accessible by dinghy.

North of Cape Maleas, Monemvasia is a medieval settlement on a large rock connected to the mainland by a causeway. The lower town preserves Byzantine and Venetian architecture, while a steep path leads to the ruined upper citadel and the church of Hagia Sophia. A hiking trail around Monemvasia follows a rough coastal path for approximately 4.5 kilometres, passing through the old town on the south side.

Cape Maleas, at the southeastern tip, is known for strong and variable winds.

An afternoon westerly breeze regularly reaches force 5 to 6. The anchorage used to access the Diros caves is exposed to this and can become untenable by early afternoon.
