The North Ionian
Last updated: 6 June 2026
Overview
The North Ionian is one of the most relaxed cruising areas in Greece. The islands of Corfu, Paxos and Lefkada sit close together, making short day sails easy. Prevailing north-westerly afternoon winds provide reliable sailing while mornings are often calm. The coastline is greener than much of Greece, with wooded hills and clear water. Harbours are frequent, tavernas plentiful, and provisioning straightforward. It is a forgiving region for newer crews, yet still rewarding for experienced sailors looking for varied anchorages, historic villages and dependable summer sailing conditions.
Attractions
On the northwest coast of Corfu, Palaiokastritsa Monastery occupies a narrow headland above a series of small bays, with open views across the Ionian. The working monastery is free to enter and the site is one of the more striking on the island.
Corfu Town's Old Byzantine Fortress is a large fortified complex built on a rocky promontory, developed through successive Byzantine, Venetian, and British occupation. The fortress is part of the UNESCO-listed ensemble of Corfu Old Town and gives panoramic views over the town and the channel toward the Albanian coast.
On the mainland coast, Parga Castle is a ruined Venetian fortification on the headland above the town, with scattered cannon and thick walls overlooking the anchorage to the west and the port to the east. Entry is free.
On the west coast of Paxos, Pappanikoli Cave is a cathedral-scale sea cave, accessible by dinghy and oriented to align with the setting sun.
Near Preveza on the mainland, Ruins of Nicopolis mark the site of a Roman city founded by Augustus to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. The extensive site includes a theatre, odeon, stadium, early Christian basilicas, and well-preserved mosaics, with a museum included in the entrance fee.
On the south shore of the Amvrakikos Gulf entrance, Vonitsa Fortress is a Byzantine and Ottoman fortification with broad views over the surrounding coastline. The site is overgrown in places but a footpath around the outer walls gives a clear sense of the fortification's scale.
Notes for mariners
The bridge at the north end of the canal is sometimes closed, affecting boats planning a transit. For the latest updates, check the reviews tab for the Lefkas swing bridge. The Lefkas canal carries a predominantly southward current of 1 to 1.5 knots, has a 4 knot speed limit, and is shallow in places despite regular dredging.
The entrance to the Ambracian Gulf at Preveza features a narrow, half-mile channel with noticeable current, often reaching up to 3 knots. During the day the current flows in to the Gulf, switching to an outgoing current in the late evening. Heavy rainfall affecting rivers that lead to the gulf, and strong east or westerly winds can affect this pattern.
