Southern Spain

The south of Spain encompasses the country's Mediterranean coastline from the French border down to the Strait of Gibraltar. Inland from the coast, the Alhambra in Granada is a Moorish palace and fortress complex dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited monuments in Spain.

Rock of Gibraltar rises steeply at the entrance to the Mediterranean. The summit can be reached by cable car and is known for its population of Barbary macaques and, on clear days, its views across the Strait to the Moroccan coast. The Northern Defences, which formed part of Gibraltar's network of fortifications and tunnels developed during the Great Siege, are open to the public.
