Southern Spain

Last updated: 11 April 2026

Overview

The south of Spain encompasses the country's Mediterranean coastline from the French border down to the Strait of Gibraltar. It is one of the most developed cruising regions in Europe, with a high concentration of marinas and a well-established infrastructure for visiting yachts. The Strait of Gibraltar at the southwestern end of the area marks the transition between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, and is a principal waypoint for yachts on passage between the two.

Attractions

For yachts heading west along this coast, notable attractions include:

The Volvo Ocean Race Museum in Alicante documents the history of the race with videos and interactive race simulators. Entrance is free.

In Cartagena, the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology holds a collection focused on ancient and medieval Mediterranean ships recovered from the seabed. The Cartagena Naval Museum covers Spanish naval history and displays the Isaac Peral submarine. The Roman Amphitheatre dates from the 1st century BC and was rediscovered in 1988, buried under more recent construction.

Inland from the coast, the Alhambra in Granada is a Moorish palace and fortress complex dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited monuments in Spain.

Rock of Gibraltar rises steeply at the entrance to the Mediterranean. The summit can be reached by cable car and is known for its population of Barbary macaques and, on clear days, its views across the Strait to the Moroccan coast. The Northern Defences, which formed part of Gibraltar's network of fortifications and tunnels developed during the Great Siege, are open to the public.

Notes for mariners

Access to Mar Menor is via the Mar Menor Lifting Bridge. Scheduled openings can be irregular. It is advised to monitor the bridge's operating VHF Ch09.

An east-setting current dominates through the Strait of Gibraltar, and winds can accelerate around the Bay of Gibraltar. Timing a passage through the Strait requires careful planning and is beyond the scope of this guide page.
