Pacific Northwest

Last updated: 24 March 2026

Overview

The Pacific Northwest of Canada centers on the British Columbia coast, where steep forested mountains drop into deep fjords, island‑studded channels, and the sheltered waters of the Salish Sea and Inside Passage. Conditions typically combine well‑protected routes with occasional open stretches. Wildlife sightings, hot springs, and a mix of Indigenous and coastal communities add to the appeal of this varied cruising ground.

Attractions

The Gulf Islands offer a dense maze of channels, marine parks, and small communities suited to shorter hops and year‑round cruising. For a more cosmopolitan experience, taking a berth at a marina or anchoring in False Creek positions you in the heart of downtown Vancouver.

To the north, Desolation Sound has warm summer water, deep coves, and steep forested slopes that make it a favourite for extended anchoring, while Princess Louisa Inlet is a steep‑walled fjord reached via Jervis Inlet and Malibu Rapids, famous for waterfalls and its snug head‑of‑inlet anchorage. Farther up the coast, the White Sulphur Hot Springs are a remote, well‑maintained hot spring near Porcupine Bay with indoor and outdoor pools in forested surroundings and a small rocky dinghy landing.

Farther north again, the Broughton Archipelago on the Inside Passage and the west coast of Vancouver Island offers excellent remote wilderness cruising.

Notes for mariners

Tides regularly reach 5 meters (15 ft), and as they flow around the larger land masses they can create challenging currents. In major rapids such as Seymour Narrows, currents can reach up to about 16 knots, so careful planning to pass at slack water is required.

Fees apply for park mooring buoys and some docks in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, and camping or park permits may be required for overnight sites. Marinas become less frequent north of Campbell River, where anchoring out and self-reliance is a more common practice.
