Bodrum Peninsula

Last updated: 12 April 2026

Overview

The Bodrum Peninsula projects westward into the Aegean from the southwestern corner of Turkey, with the Gulf of Gökova to the north and the Gulf of Cos to the south. It is one of the most frequented cruising areas on the Turkish coast, with bays and anchorages distributed across both sides of the peninsula and a busy concentration of marina berths and yacht services at its western end.

Attractions

The area has a strong concentration of ancient sites.

At Didim on the northern edge, Temple of Apollo is a large temple complex with standing columns and carved stonework, still under active excavation.

Further south, the Iasos Ruins spread across a small peninsula and take in Greek, Roman, and Byzantine remains, including a Roman villa with well-preserved mosaics.

In Bodrum town, Bodrum Fortress was built by the Knights of St John in the 15th century using stone from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and now houses an underwater archaeology museum.

Notes for mariners

The predominant wind here, the Meltemi, blows from the northwest throughout the summer months.
