Mediterranean Coast
Last updated: 10 April 2026
Overview
Morocco's Mediterranean coast runs from the southern shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla serve as common entry and staging points, eastward some 300 NM to the Algerian border. The area close to the strait has busy commercial ports and serves as a key shipping route between Europe and Africa. East of Ceuta the Rif Mountains back a quieter coastline, with facilities thinning toward Nador and the Algerian frontier.
Attractions
The blue-washed medina of Chefchaouen, set in a valley of the Rif Mountains, is one of the most distinctive urban environments in North Africa. Its steep cobbled lanes, dyed-wool workshops, and 15th-century kasbah occupy the central square alongside the octagonal minaret of the Great Mosque.
Guarding the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, the Murallas Reales in Ceuta are a substantial set of 16th-century fortifications that have played a central role in the enclave's history through successive sieges and occupations. The walls enclose a moat and defensive earthworks and remain one of the most complete examples of early modern military architecture on the North African coast.
Notes for mariners
An east-setting current dominates through the Strait of Gibraltar. Further into the Mediterranean, a coastal counter-current caused by the "Alboran Gyre" sea circulation runs west at up to 2 knots.
