Central Dalmatian Coast
Last updated: 4 April 2026
Overview
The coast between Šibenik in the north and Hvar in the south is the most heavily sailed stretch of the Croatian Adriatic, with a concentration of islands, channels, and anchorages and a well-developed marina network. The area takes in well-known destinations such as Split, Trogir, and the islands of Brač and Vis.
Attractions
Split was founded within the walls of Diocletian's Palace, a late Roman imperial complex built at the turn of the 4th century AD and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continuously inhabited since antiquity, the palace today houses cafes, shops, and residents alongside the surviving Roman structures.
The fortified islet of Kaštilac Gomilica, set in the bay of Kaštela, served as a filming location for Game of Thrones. There is an anchorage in front of the town with good dinghy access ashore.
On the island of Vis, the Vis Submarine Pen dates from the Yugoslav-era military occupation that kept Vis closed to foreign visitors until 1989. The tunnels, cut into the rock to shelter torpedo boats, can be explored by dinghy and on foot.
Krka National Park lies inland from Šibenik, where the Krka river descends through a series of waterfalls and gorges before reaching the sea. Sailors typically use Skradin Marina as a base to take a tour boat upriver into the park. Key attractions here are the Roski Slap falls and the island monastery of Visovac.
Near Šibenik, the Boat Tunnel was cut during the Second World War to allow torpedo boats to bypass a barrier stretched across the Sv Ante channel. A path along the southern side of the channel gives access to the tunnel entrance, along with a small stone church and hermit retreat carved into the rock nearby.
Notes for mariners
The central Dalmatian coast carries a high volume of charter traffic during the summer months, with popular locations becoming crowded from July through August. The Maestral, a northwest sea breeze, is the prevailing summer wind. The Bora can affect this coast, arriving from the northeast with little warning and reaching considerable strength.
