Côte d’Azur

Last updated: 5 April 2026

Overview

The Côte d'Azur is a densely developed stretch of coast with a high concentration of marinas and a well-established infrastructure for visiting yachts. The coastline is rocky and mountainous for much of its length, with the Alps descending close to the sea.

The Lérins Islands, lying just offshore from Cannes, offer a quieter alternative to the busy mainland shore and are a popular stop for yachts cruising the coast.

Attractions

Off Cannes, the Lérins Islands provide a striking contrast to the busy mainland shore. Île Saint-Honorat is home to a working monastery set among vineyards and pine trees, with a ruined medieval watchtower and a walking trail around the island's perimeter. The monastery chapel is open to visitors outside of mass hours.

Also near Cannes, the Cannes Underwater Eco-Museum at Île Sainte-Marguerite features six sculptures by environmental artist Jason deCaires Taylor, placed on the seabed in 2021 and accessible by snorkel. The statues represent figures from local Cannes life and are designed to function as artificial reefs as marine growth develops over time.

In Antibes, the Musée Picasso occupies the Château Grimaldi, a historic seafront building where Picasso worked in the autumn of 1946 and donated a significant body of work produced during that period. The museum holds one of the most important collections of his work in France.

Notes for mariners

There are several marine parks along the Côte d'Azur including the Parc National des Calanques, the Parc National de Port-Cros, and the protected zones around the Lérins Islands. Mariners should familiarise themselves with current anchoring and navigational restrictions before visiting these areas.
