Commercial harbour and point of entry for Albania
by SV Ribellu on 15 March 2019
It was a safe harbour to stay in for some time in 2018 - the best (and only) thing available in the area. Approx 10 euros per night to stay alongside. Must have an agent. Easy access walking through the port to get groceries etc. Durres town is ok, and can rent a car and drive to Tirana (book enterprise online - don't waste days walking around like we did as nobody wants short term rentals!). High concrete dock so need to be fendered very well. Need chafe protection for mooring lines and to get creative in tying some lines to exposed pieces of re-bar. It is a commercial port and they unload grain from ships onto the wharf and the remains are everywhere. One day the wind blew opposite direction and blew grain all over our boat (and inside where some hatches were open!). In august we also had a massive storm pass over one night. The wind came from one direction at 50-60ish knots, and then swung around 180-degrees. One of the shore cranes was not secured and so the wind pushed it along the rails by itself until it crashed into a silo. Pays to take a look for unsecured cranes when walking around and mention it to your agent if not secured when not in use - itself or its bucket swinging around everywhere could have done a ton of damage!
