This port is a historic place. In 1441, Genoese families settled there, following an agreement with the governor of Provence: if they were allowed to live in an autonomous republic, they would ensure the protection of the coast, infested with pirates. Thus St Tropez strengthened itself, and acquired its reputation of city of the sailors and the adventurers (among them the famous Suffren (1729-1788), the terror of the English in Canada as in India).
