Lively port city, and a port of entry. The city is built like an amphitheatre on the mountains and gives an imposing picture.
Ashore: shops, tavernas and cafes for all tastes in the lively city centre and at the harbour.
At Nea Paramos, SW of Kavala town, there's a good dry dock (fluent English spoken) at Manitas Marine (http://www.manitsasmarine.com/) suitable for leaving a boat over winter (watch those frosts, though).
- the old town with the small streets are worth visiting as well as the Byzantine fortress, the aqueduct and the Egyptian Imaret.
- there is a lot to visit in the neighbourhood of Kavala: the excavations of Philippi, Nestos gorge, etc.
