Country: Saint Lucia

Good shelter with high hills north, east and south brake the worst of the wind. However, Marigot is home for numerous charter boats. Arrive early and park your boats (bow to and 2 stern anchors) far into the mangroves as possible. However, this bay offers no protection when a hurricane passes close to the north of St Lucia. The sea coming from the west will be increased by the funnel-shaped outer harbour and will sweep over the sand spit.

History: 1980 hurricane Allen centre passed close south of Vieux Fort. Boats sheltering in Marigot fared fairly well. Boats secured in the mangroves did well unless they had a boat drag down on them.

Note about hurricane holes:

The information provided here is based on experience and input from members of our community. The general consensus is that hurricane holes are not suitable for direct strikes or category 4 or 5 storms. Your best hurricane plan is to be out of its path. If you must weather a hurricane or storm YOU must talk to your vessel insurance company to confirm if YOUR vessel insurance covers YOUR hurricane plan at this location.
