Warning: follow the buoyed channel between Nieuw Amsterdam and Johan-en-Margaretha as there are several sets of fishing nets that stretch almost across the river.
Anchor: between the red buoy and the water taxis jetty in 7m of soft mud. The water, while not clear, is much less muddy than in the Suriname River. Land on the jetty by dinghy taking care not to obstruct the water taxis; the current is strong here (up to 4 kts) and might be difficult to reach the jetty at low tide.
Ashore: simple provision shops whose forecourts become local bars in the evening. There is also one small restaurant. Sunday afternoon and evening is lively.
just ashore the jungle is teeming with birdlife.
upstream, the beautifully restored plantation at Frederiksdorp is a pleasant 10-minute walk along a clear path or you can use their jetty for landing the dinghy if you eat at the plantation restaurant.
across the river, there is the small village of Marienberg and the old plantation buildings. This can be reached by dinghy (jetty) or water taxi.
on the Atlantic beach, the Matapica Nationa Park and nesting turtles.
