Sassari is a genuine city of Sardinia, a few miles inshore from Castelsardo and Porto Torres. It has a very interesting medieval centre and some modern areas. It's a really pleasant town, though not a big tourist destination, which makes it even better. There are great museum in Sassari, a lot of things to do and fine shopping too.
the medieval quarter is all alleys and piazzas clustered around the inevitable cathedral (duomo);
in penultimate Sunday of May, the Ascension, La Cavalcata Sarda, a colourful horse parade; horsemanship is the theme, with parades, decorated costumes, dashing equestrian feats and traditional song and dance in one of the piazzas.
visit the Sanna Museum with its amazing collection of Nuraghic artefacts. The Nuragh peoples were advanced Neolithic - bronze age folk, who built enduring giant stone fortresses which remain as their outstanding monument.
